How to Apply Perfume: A Step-By-Step Guide to Boost Projection and Performance.

Want your perfume to project further and last longer? This is our step-by-step guide, proven to boost the performance of your perfume and ensure you smell amazing for even longer. Follow these 5 Steps to increase your favourite fragrances' performance.
Perfume can last several hours on skin, but many people are missing simple tips that can massively improve this. Firstly, a lot of people spray their favourite perfume on their skin or their wrists and proceed to rub the perfume in to their skin, in the hopes that it will be better absorbed and last longer. Not only does this ruin the perfume, it also does nothing for the longevity of the scent.
Secondly, we see many people spray a nauseating amount of perfume all over their body and clothes to ensure the scent lasts all day. Again, an inefficient method that is most likely wasting your favourite perfume and also your bank balance. Finally, the most common practice in perfume which is done so very wrong is... the time that people are spraying perfume. I know you are probably thinking, "what do they mean by the time?", read on and you will see how this can be detrimental to the performance.
Now, onto the 5-step approach we have all been waiting for:
1. NEVER rub your perfume after applying it on your skin: Our first tip, and one many people don't do, is letting the perfume sit for a while after you have applied it. We see this happen all the time and every time it hurts us to see because we know what this does to a perfume. Perfume has been expertly crafted to release various scent profiles at different times during the development of the perfume (through top, middle and base notes). So what happens when you rub the perfume you may ask? Essentially, you are breaking down the perfume oils before they have a chance to naturally develop on your skin, damaging the intended scent profile and reducing both projection and longevity of the perfume. Here is what you should do: spray your perfume on your skin and patiently wait for it to dry. You can wave your hands slowly through the air or blow air onto it to help speed up the dry down if needed. That's it. A straightforward first step to improve your perfume application.
2. Ensure you are moisturizing your target area before you spray your perfume: Second on the list is ensuring your neck or wherever you are spraying is moisturised before spraying your fragrance. This tip is quite well known in the fragrance world, but it is still worth noting just in case you were unaware. So, before you go to spray your favourite perfume, moisturize the target area first and then spray. Moisturised skin helps the perfume oils cling to it and stay closer to the surface, creating a longer lasting and more projecting fragrance than without. You can even go a step further and add a small layer of vaseline to the neck area to further boost this effect if required. A simple but effective tip.
3. Location matters: Now this one is easily mixed up by people and overdone by the majority. With long lasting and strong perfume (think leather, oud, tobacco based perfume), you don't need many sprays. You want the perfume to project, but not suffocate the people around you. We recommend the following for strong perfumes: 3-5 sprays around the neck area; two on the front side of the neck, two on the back side of the neck and one more in the centre if desired. For lighter fragrances that are more subtle, you may want anywhere from 6-8, to even 10 sprays for some, but remember you mustn't over do it. Again, stick to the neck areas or pulse points such as the wrists for the best performance. We don't usually recommend spraying perfume onto clothing as it can sometimes stain the clothes. However, this does greatly improve the performance with most perfumes lasting a lot longer on clothing than skin. Do keep in mind that once you have sprayed your clothing, try not to mix other perfumes or scents onto the clothing unintentionally.
4. Layering your perfumes together: When applying a perfume have you thought about applying more than one to your skin at the same time? This is a technique called layering and it can be quite confusing at first. A simple tip from us is to layer two fragrances when you first start, either combining fragrances that compliment each other (sweet and fruity fragrances), or contradictory fragrances (one sweet and one woody). This way, you not only get a new smelling perfume, but it is very likely that the performance of this perfume has increased as well as it's projection. There are many different ways to layer perfumes, so the best advice is to test some combinations out and see what you like.
Final piece of advice
That's all of our tips for now! You are now (hopefully), more educated on applying perfume to your skin and understand how to improve the projection and longevity of your favorite scents.
